Terevaka Night Hike

Experience the outdoors at night, walking under the light of the moon to Easter Island's highest point. Begin the journey at the old Vaitea Ranch and head to the summit of Mt Terevaka. Your guide will point out some of the most visible stars in the sky and explain some of the ways Polynesians used the night skies for navigation and marking seasons in ancient times, as well as some of the stories and legends attached to different stars and constellations.

After spending some time at the summit, descend on the same trail to the finish point at Vaitea. Included in the hike are headlamps for assistance on the trail, a cup of hot chocolate and a slice of po'e (banana bread).

The Terevaka Night Hike includes –

  • General stargazing and explanation on Polynesian navigational techniques

  • Use of a red-light night vision head lamp

  • Cup of hot chocolate and slice of poʻe

  • Maximum of eight people per hike

 

Things to bring –

  • Warm clothing

  • Adequate footwear

  • Bottle of water

  • Good digital camera for night photography (optional)

Itinerary - 

  • Start walk at Fundo Vaitea at 8PM

  • Head to the Terevaka Summit

  • Learn about Polynesian navigational techniques and legends

  • Descend along the same route to Fundo Vaitea

  • Duration - 4 hours

  • Pick-up from your accommodation between 7:30PM-8:00PM

PLEASE NOTE -

The Terevaka Night Hike only operates from Sunday to Thursday, four days before or two days after the full moon. Green Island Tours reserves the right to postpone or cancel tours on evenings with rain or high winds. In such cases, a full refund or postponement tour will be offered.
